This log book of our hitch-hiking travels was kept in a loose-leaf notebook, and much of it was written in strange places. It is an indication of how much some things have changed in the last half-century. In reading it, recall that this was war time; gasoline, and hence travel, was very limited; I was in a sailor’s uniform. Our only concern about safety was being picked up by poor drivers, and drivers were not generally fearful that a hitch-hiking couple would turn out to be thieves or murderers.
