The Crusades

Oh have you heard of the great crusades
To conquer the Holy Land
Where many a gallant knight was killed
By the enemy’s mighty hand?

How the first crusade met nought but defeat,
While the second one tasted success?
And how in the end the Turks won out
Because of their mightiness?

But the Christians gained by this mighty trip
As much as if they had won.
For they found many comforts in Palestine
Though back home they’d survived on none.

For comforts were great in that lovely land:
Spices, jewelry and the like.
And carpets that surpassed their finest ones,
And made well worth that torturous hike.
