PG and TD move to Los Angeles. (SEH moved with them)
PG gets a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, from Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island. (Thesis advisor, W. Prager; thesis title: “On Torsion of Plastic Bars; Approximate Solutions of Problems in Plane Plastic Flow.”)
In June I presented my first paper at a national meeting, took my first plane trip, and received my diploma without attending the graduation ceremony. Later that summer Thea and Sue took their first plane trip, flying from Providence to Atlantic City. Then we moved to Los Angeles where I was Assistant Professor of Mathematics at UCLA.
